Ghosts are said to outnumber residents in what is allegedly Europe's most haunted city.
One of the most popular ways to go ghoul-spotting is on a ghost walk - the atmospheric bunkum is fun and the stories, and accounts of sightings over the centuries, are fascinating.
There are a number of ghost walks in York - The Original Ghost Walk (tel: 01759 373090 send an e-mail) meets at the Kings Arms Pub by Ouse Bridge at 8pm every night, and returns there for a lip-stiffening brandy after you have been spooked.
The ghosts can be a bit publicity shy but sightings on the walks are not unknown.
Cost: Adults £3.00, children £2.00.
Another spooky visit in the city is to the delightfully silly York Dungeon (12 Clifford St, www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/yorkdungeon tel: 01904 632599).
The life of Dick Turpin, the highwayman who rode here from London, is also celebrated here.
Opening times: Daily April to September 10am to 5pm. October to March 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Admission prices: Adults £7.95, children £5.95, OAPs £5.95, students £6.95.
