Why minis and cricket remind us of England

A cricketer dressed in a mini-skirt on his way to the pub might raise a few eyebrows - but it apparently typifies the ultimate in Englishness.

A new list, unveiled today, includes pubs,cricket and the Sixties-style short skirt among the most culturally significant things about our country. Hadrian's Wall, the Eden Project and morris dancing are also included in the list, which was compiled after a public vote.

The survey was conducted by Icons, a not-for-profit company which aims to provide a snapshot of the nation for its online collection on icons.org.uk

Organisers said the project, launched in January and backed by the Government, captured the public imagination.

Spokesman Jerry Doyle said: 'We were delighted with the response. About a quarter of a million people have visited the site and put forward more than 5,000 nominations. We have also had about 300,000 votes.

'Nominations have ranged from popular national treasures such as Dr Who to controversial suggestions like fox-hunting.'

Icons is looking for the 100 items which symbolise England. Today's release is the second lot to be announced. Stonehenge, Punch and Judy and the FA Cup were put forward in January.

Four new lots of items will be announced during 2006 until the collection reaches 100.
