Pub popularity: the Punch Tavern in Fleet Street
A pub which reintroduced the long-forgotten art of conversation has been named Britain's best watering hole.
The White Horse in Parson's Green, West London, has no music or TV and drinkers are encouraged to share tables and conversation with strangers. This fresh approach meant it placed first in a list of England's top 20 pubs.
'The White Horse has a traditional pub feel - it is airy and comfortable, with pretty people,' said landlord Mark Dorber.
'One of our driving aims is to improve the cultural appreciation of beer and to link it with food in civilised surroundings.
'People are encouraged to mix and share tables and, with no TVs and music, we promote conversation.'
The Churchill Arms in Kensington was second, followed by The Fat Cat in Norwich.
One other London pub made the list - The Punch Tavern in Fleet Street which placed fourth.
The list, published in trade paper The Morning Advertiser, was compiled after 500 industry experts rated their favourite watering holes for service, atmosphere, food, drinks and menus.
The Square and Compass in Worth Matravers, Dorset, which was fifth, has a fossil museum and hosts a pumpkin festival every October.
Manager Kevin Hunt attributed the pub's success to its 'no frills' design and attitude.
'We are honest hard-working chaps and we're not going to install a jukebox or cash machine just to make more money.
'People enjoy coming here - what more can I say?' he said.
