Beget is the jewel in the Catalan Pyrenees' crown. This medieval 'poble' rests at the bottom of a deep, tree-lined valley, and nestling in its cobbled streets are stone houses with wooden balconies overhanging the Trull river.
With only 20 inhabitants, this tranquil village is for true escapism and relaxation. On arrival, you are greeted by the sight of the 12th Century Church of Sant Cristofol, which houses the renowned Majesty of Beget, a beautiful 2 metre-tall carving.
The narrow winding path then leads you to the small stone bridge, overlooking the gentle flowing waters of the Trull. The riverbanks are awash with wildlife, from the rabble of brightly coloured butterflies, to the congregation of birds that hop among the smooth rocks.
Lying back to feel the sun's warmth on your face, you can follow the flight of swallows that dance enthusiastically across the sky. When your tastebuds awaken, you will recieve no warmer a welcome than in El Forn.
This restaurant offers a selection of the finest Catalan dishes such as 'conill amb figues'(rabbit with figs) 'ànec amb peres' (duck with pears) or 'bacallà amb panses i pinyons'(cod with raisons and pine nuts).
You can savour this delicious menu whilst admiring the majestic views over the valley and up to the mountain tops above.
Finally, if like me, you fall in love with Beget, El Forn has four delightful en-suite bedrooms with a private garden, so you can continue your romance with this Catalan jewel for longer.
