Croatian tourism officials have issued a warning to beach-going tourists to stay close to the shore after sightings of a big shark were reported in the northern Adriatic.
Following sightings by fishermen near the towns of Pula and Rijeka of a four metre (13 foot) shark, the country's Maritime Affairs Ministry said, 'Although there is no official confirmation about sharks, we recommend that bathers do not swim too far away from the coast.'
Shark attacks are very rare in Croatia, and the Adriatic's native shark population comprises smaller species that do not bother humans. Larger sharks do sometimes stray into the Adriatic after following ships.
A spokeswoman for the maritime police added, 'We don't want to create panic, but we do need to tell the public after receiving the reports, even though the police could not confirm them.'
