Last year my partner and I went to Cyprus for our holidays, while in Cyprus we decided to go on a tour over to Cairo. We boarded a large cruise ship and set sail for Egypt, the ship was great: good food, several bars and brilliant staff.
The next morning we had to be up at five, after breakfast we docked in Port Said, it was utterly fascinating, we could see temples and mosques many of them with golden roofs.
We then got on a coach and were quite alarmed to find we had an armed guard on our bus. We then realised we had a police car and several army trucks escorting us.
Reaching Cairo is a massive culture shock: 18 million people live there. There were clay huts alongside expensive hotels.
Our first stop was the museum. It was hot and crowded, but standing face to face with Tutankhamen's death mask is unbelivable.
Then on to the pyramids and sphinx an amazing experience. You cannot put it into words. Everyone should go if they get the chance.
At six o'clock we boarded the ship to sail back to Cyprus, tired, dusty, and utterly captivated by Egypt. So much so that this year we hope to go to Luxor, to the Valley of the Kings.
