The number of Britons taking snowsport holidays last winter rose 1.3 per cent to more than 1.2 million, a new survey reveals.
Of these, 235,000 travelled independently, taking advantage of what was 'a great snow season for most countries', the Ski Club of Great Britain said.
The 2003-04 winter increase meant that the market has now grown by 8.5 per cent since the 2001-02 season.
Top snowsport destination for Britons heading for the slopes was France, with Austria and Italy the next most popular places.
Among the most-visited resorts last winter were Val d'Isere and Meribel in France, St Anton and Lech in Austria, Verbier and Zermatt in Switzerland, and Breckenridge and Vail in Colorado, USA.
The Ski Club's findings for 2003-04 also showed thar despite the increase in holidays on the slopes, only 1.8 per cent of those questioned said their last, or last but one, overseas trip had been a snowsport one.
Price-wise, the overall cost of a snowsport holiday rose from £615 in winter 2002-03 to £645 in 2003-04. Four in five trips last winter lasted for seven days and just 1 per cent for 14 days.
It was also revealed that more people are now booking their winter holidays online.
