Free condoms, posters and drink coasters will be distributed to bars, hostels and other backpacker haunts around Sydney, as part of the new campaign 'Safe in the Sack'. The campaign, intends to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases among the thousands of young travellers who flock to Sydney each year. According to health authorities increasing numbers are having unprotected sex and putting their health at risk. The Family Planning Association released preliminary findings of a study this week, which showed roughly half of all backpackers have casual sex while in Australia. A Canadian study found that when engaging in casual sex, one third of backpackers did not use a condom. 'Unprotected casual sex places backpackers at particular risk because they often spend time in areas where HIV and other STD infection patterns are different from those with which they are familiar,' said Australian sexual health expert Linda Dayan.
