A plane transporting tourists to Mallorca sparked a major security alert across Europe, officials have revealed.
Fighter jets were scrambled after the pilots on the Boeing 737 did not make contact with air traffic controllers prompting them to fear the jet may have been hijacked by suicide terrorists.
The security scare, which happened on May 1, put French, Dutch and German air forces on high alert after officials feared terrorists may be trying to stage an attack on the day many countries joined the European Union.
The flight, travelling from Bergen in Norway, had 186 passengers on board.
Only when a cabin attendant noticed French fighter jets out of a window did the scare come to an end. The pilots onboard then radioed the fighter jets to report the flight had been 'normal and routine.
