Hotel workers demand Olympic bonus
Last updated at 12:37 18 June 2004
Hotel workers in Athens went on strike yesterday and threatened further action during the Olympics if demands for a summer bonus are ignored.
The group is the latest union to press for an Olympic bonus following the government's promise to give a 2,500 euros bonus to security forces during the Olympics in August (13-29).
The hotel workers, however, are not civil servants and must negotiate directly with hotel owners.
The 24-hour strike was marked by clashes between police and strikers outside the offices of the Athens Hotel Owners Association. The hotel workers are also seeking a new contract with better pay and benefits.
