For foot's sake: Italian police guard the city's fountains
Police in Rome are cracking down on tourists who dare to dangle their feet in the city's famous fountains.
The Eternal City scorches in summer - temperatures often reach 40° - but cooling your tootsies in Rome's many fountains is now strictly forbidden.
One disgruntled Roman complained in Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera: 'They (tourists) swim in our fountains, they wash in them, or they just sit dangling their feet in Gianlorenzo Berlini's great Baroque creations.'
The city's most recognisable fountain, the Trevi, is now under constant guard as police crack down permanently on foot-dangling.
'The moment our backs are turned, off come the sandals and in go the feet' a local officer was heard to mutter.
It's not the first time Italian tourist officials have laid the law down for visitors.
Venice last year decided its pedestrians' paradise should operate a system of 'one-way alleys' to reduce congestion.
Fines for walking in the wrong direction currently range from 25 to 500 euros.
