£68m cost of term-time holidays

Stubborn parents will give schools a £68million windfall in fines by continuing to take their children on holiday in term-time, it was claimed last night.
A new law coming into effect this month allows heads to fine parents £100 if they take pupils out of school without permission.
But up to one in five families is willing to carry on because they save on cheaper offseason holidays, a report said. About 680,000 children are expected to incur a fine.
Teletext Holidays, which carried out the report, said: 'Parents are increasingly savvy when it comes to booking family holidays.' Heads have been told that lessons missed for holidays can be classed as truancy.
