Décor:
16th-century aristocratic Renaissance grandeur, with ancient chandeliers, high, fluted ceilings and an eclectic collection of games for wet afternoons.
Bedroom: plain yet cosy, with antique furniture and views across the Bisenzio valley.
Bathroom: uninspired and basic.
Food: breakfast is the only meal served, but it is delicious - eggs, jams, honey and fruit all come from local farms. The food is complemented by the surroundings - the breakfast room is decorated with frescoes and there is a picturesque loggia where you can eat in the warmer months.
Fellow guests: German, French and American couples looking for a bit of romantic escapism, ramblers here to take advantage of the many walks on the doorstep, and bluestockings after a bit of history.
Extra treats: home-made wine and biscotti are available in the living room. The 16th-century landscaped gardens and the four pet geese who greeted us on arrival were also a charming surprise.
Tariff: e60 (£38) for a single room with bath/shower, e90 (£58) for a double room with bath/shower.
