Located between Queensland and Papua New Guinea lays the group of islands collectively known as the Torres Strait Islands.
Thursday Island is the largest of them all. It is a genuine Aussie experience, so far removed from the tourism-driven tropical north Queensland.
The islands are predominantly inhabited by Torres Strait Islanders, the less heard about indigenous Australians.
To visit this island will provide you with an in-depth indigenous Australian cultural experience where TSI children still hunt for their meals, spearing fish and turtle in the crystal clear waters of the Strait.
Geographically, the island is incredible, with virtually untouched beaches and gorgeous, lush green scenery. The weather is superb, averaging about 35 degrees with incredible sunshine.
The islands are not very accessible, but I would advise that if you are planning a holiday to Australia that you ask around and spend at least a couple of days on one of the islands.
