Ambassade Hotel
Staying at the friendly Ambassade Hotel resembles living in a beautiful labyrinth.
Just getting to your room may entail climbing up narrow staircases then disappearing down long corridors.
This is because, contrary to the rather orderly facade overlooking the Herengracht - or 'gentlemen's canal', the hotel is actually ten old merchants' houses linked together, stretching all the way back to the Singel canal.
The breakfast room and salons to read and relax in are all furnished with antique furniture and glass chandeliers, and none of the 59 rooms are decorated in the same manner.
Next door to the hotel, the owners have just opened the Koan Float, a spa centre with a New Age ambiance where weary travellers can relax by floating weightlessly in fragrant, salty water, followed by a shiatsu massage and a session of reflexology.

T'Hotel
Just opened, and with only seven rooms so far, this is a great discovery for those who are lucky enough to reserve well in advance.
Overlooking one of Amsterdam's prettiest and most tranquil canals, this fashionable guesthouse sits above a tempting antiques boutique, whose owners run the hotel too.
Breakfast is simply delicious, and guests come away feeling pampered and spoilt.

Hotel Toren
This 40-room hotel is outstanding value for money, with all the trappings of luxury accommodation combined with the charm of a perfectly restored 17th Century building of marble hallways, decorated ceilings and ornate fireplaces.
At the back there is a tranquil, shady garden for afternoon drinks, while breakfast is served in a rather grand dining room.
Rooms overlooking the garden at the back have big, bright French windows, while rooms on the canal side have a jacuzzi attached to their bathroom.
The hotel is situated near one of Amsterdam's most famous churches, the Westerkerk, where Rembrandt is buried.
