Panama Canal and South America
Last updated at 10:54 02 January 2002
A trip through the Panama Canal is rated by experienced cruisers as one of the great sea-going pleasures.
The 50-mile trip down the canal takes all day and the way that the big ships are eased through the locks is a minor miracle of navigation.
The star attraction in South America is a trip up the Amazon River.
The main inland port is Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon jungle, which is 1,000 miles up river from the Atlantic Ocean.
