Where to go in November, December, January
Last updated at 13:50 29 November 2001
November
Most resorts in America and Canada open and are in full swing by Thanksgiving (late November), making extensive use of artificial snowmaking if there is not enough of the natural stuff.
Outside Thanksgiving weekend, accommodation prices are very good value. In Europe only high resorts with glaciers are open and slopes and facilities in town are limited.
December
Early December is quiet and good value but few European resorts are open. All resorts try to be fully open in time for Christmas and New Year - which are some of the most popular times of the year.
Prices are high and resorts (and therefore slopes and lifts) are full. Yet snow is often still in short supply - so if you can go at another time, consider doing so.
January
Bargain time for packages to European resorts as it is low season and all resorts are open. Expect clouds and snow (or rain low down if you are unlucky) rather than day after day of sunshine. And be prepared for cold temperatures.
A good time to go to avoid the crowds and get good value for money.
