Where to go: Rest of Europe

Quite a few tour operators feature Slovenia, the first state to break away from former Yugoslavia.
It has beautiful scenery, good beginner terrain and instruction and is good value for money.
But the lifts are mainly slow and old and there is little to interest good skiers.
Sweden and Norway have good reliable snow because of their northerly situation.
But most downhill ski areas are tiny and suit beginners and intermediates best - the main exception is Åre in Sweden, which hosts World Cup races and is bigger (but still has little to interest advanced skiers). The mountains here can be cold and windswept.
Cross-country skiing is, however, excellent and extensive, and there are lots of non-skiing activities to try, including great snowmobiling and dogsledding in the wilderness.
Après-ski is taken very seriously, especially in Sweden, with lively, crowded bars full of families as well as singles in the afternoons.
Alcohol in Norway, though, is extremely expensive.
