Restaurants and bars

For dining on a lavish scale try Rogano in Exchange Place, a scallop's throw from George Square.
This seafood restaurant is a Glasgow institution, with decor inspired by the locally built Queen Mary ocean liner, and to eat at Rogano you really do need to push the boat out. We spent a deliciously expensive Saturday night here.
If you want to slurp half-a-dozen aphrodisiac oysters (£8.75) and tuck into a perfectly prepared lobster (£32.50) in an atmosphere of 1920s decadence, then this is the place to do it. The house champagne (£33) slipped down rather nicely. We also explored the West End, an area of graceful red sandstone terraces and leafy crescents. Again, it's ideal for idle wandering.
If you're in the vicinity of Byres Road when hunger strikes, you're in luck. This busy street is at the heart of an area which has several excellent bars and restaurants.
The Ubiquitous Chip, on Ashton Lane behind Byres Road, provides outstanding Scottish fare in a setting that resembles a luxuriant indoor forest.
We enjoyed an excellent two course lunch, with coffee, for £19.95.
Alternatively, celebrity chef Nick Nairn's restaurant Nairns, on Woodside Crescent, offers a five star eating experience and scope for a bit of star-spotting.
