The high-flying generation: Two thirds of kids have been abroad before they turn ten
Britain’s youngsters are a considerably more travelled generation than their parents and grandparents, according to a survey that looks at our modern holiday habits.
The boom in budget airlines over the 15 years, and the proliferation of regular air routes to European destinations that were not previously served by traditional carriers, has led to a situation where over two thirds of kids have been on a plane during childhood.
Above the clouds: Over two thirds of children have flown before the age of ten
The survey, conducted by easyJet, reveals that 67 per cent of Britons have caught a flight to an overseas destination before the age of ten.
And plenty of youngsters have seen foreign corners of the planet on a more regular basis – almost a quarter of youngsters have journeyed by air over four times before they have started secondary school (generally at age 11).
This is in stark contrast to their parents.
Almost one fifth of parents questioned (17 per cent) said that they did not travel as much as their offspring when they were the same age.
This figure dropped to just above one-in–ten (11 per cent) when it came to the children’s grandparents.
And over half the parents surveyed for the research – 56 per cent – admitted that they had never travelled abroad by the time they celebrated their tenth birthday.
According to the study, beach holidays were the most popular choice for travellers heading abroad with their children – 61 per cent saying that they choose buckets, spades, sun, sand and sea when it comes to a week’s relaxation as a family.
