Magical Morocco: Sunshine and sand - Agadir in 60 seconds
Continuing our occasional series of short guides to enticing destinations, Kate O'Grady runs through the charms of Agadir in, well, about a minute...
Golden sands: Agadir's six-mile beach throws up a few exotic sights
Why?
Much of Agadir was destroyed and rebuilt in the Sixties after an earthquake. But its charm and hospitality endure. There are no quaint, historic souks, but the six-mile beach and year-round sun speaks for itself.
What to do?
Beyond the beach, Agadir is an intriguing wander. The Marche Municipal (Avenue des FAR) is worth a peek. The Medina d'Agadir, a short, cheap taxi ride from town, is a tranquil spot to learn about local crafts over a glass of mint tea.
Where to eat?
An abundance of French-influenced restaurants border the beach. But, for a local, bustling culinary experience, head to L'Etoile de Marrakesh (Rue de la Foire).
Where to stay?
Money goes further in Agadir. Tagadirt's simple Moorish studios are centrally located and start at around £32 (00 212 528 84 71 02). The Sofitel Agadir Royal Bay Resort (www.sofitel.com) is more refined, with a modern Moroccan feel. Rooms from £120.
How to get there?
Royal Air Maroc flies from London to Agadir return from £252 ( 020 730 758 00, www.royalairmaroc.com).
