Website of the week: thegoodpubguide.co.uk
The Good Pub Guide is the UK pub-goers' bible. It's been published annually for the last 27 years, is rigorously independent: no pub can pay for inclusion, and the main entries are based on anonymous inspections from editorial staff.
Last month, an online version of the guidebook was officially launched.
The quest to find a good pub is considered the British version of El Dorado...
Strengths
The printed guide costs £15.99, but access to www.thegoodpubguide.co.uk is free.
All the important information in the book - the detailed reviews for the main recommendations, the briefer second-tier "lucky dip" suggestions that are largely based on readers' reports, the awards for pubs with outstanding beer, wine and food - also appears on the website.
And in fact, the website is much more user-friendly than the guidebook. You can search for pubs in lots of different ways, including by name, or by village, town, city, or within a set number of miles from a specified place.
The good pub guide online may have a little catching up to do before it can contend with other online guides such as beerintheevening.com
Along with the Good Pub Guide recommended establishments, there are also listings of 50,000 other pubs across the country. The precise location of every pub is shown on a Google map. And users of the website can submit star ratings and reviews of pubs they've visited.
Weaknesses
To date, few readers' reviews of pubs have been posted up - though that should change if the website gets well used.
While Good Pub Guide recommended pubs normally appear at the top of search results, sometimes the "lucky dip" ones don't, so can easily be overlooked.
