Website of the week www.gapyear.com
Gap-year travel is booming in these recession-hit times, with increasing numbers exploring the world before trying to find a first or new job, or using redundancy pay-offs to fund an extended trip.
If you fall in to any of these categories, then have a look at www.gapyear.com, which claims to be the world's largest gap-year information source and community, with over one million users annually.
A gap year can be a great way to take time out and find inspiration...
Strengths
Its comprehensiveness - it's likely to be a one-stop starting point for everything you need to gen up on, and fix, for your big trip.
The free-to-access travel planners - some country specific, others themed on subjects such as how to plan a round-the-world trip, backpacker fire safety and travelling solo as a female - can be excellent.
There's also an inspiring choice of travel experiences and work placements - from caring for elephants in Thailand, to working on a conservation project in Nepal and teaching in Guatemala.
Gapyear.com doesn't organise or book trips itself, but promotes other UK companies that do so. Though it vets the companies, you should carry out your own checks too. One company featured on the website, Global Xperience, went in to administration earlier this month.
Weaknesses
On some sections - for example, on travel insurance and travel kit - it would be helpful to have more judgements and advice, rather than just links to suppliers. Also, the sheer amount of information on the website can be overwhelming.
