John McEnroe reckons there should be a People's Sunday at Wimbledon... so what do the players think?
John McEnroe raised a hot topic when he called for a People’s Sunday at Wimbledon, so what do others think?
Sportsmail spoke to some of players, past and present, and the tournament referee to get their views on whether there should be an extra day of tennis in SW19.
In favour: Novak Djokovic believes there should be play at Wimbledon on the middle Sunday
Novak Djokovic
‘We have to rethink because Sunday was beautiful; no rain yet no matches played. No other Grand Slam has this rule. We respect tradition but some rules I believe should be changed for the better of the schedule and players.’
Eugenie Bouchard
‘I think it’s quaint. I know this year it was kind of frustrating for some players but I think it’s nice to keep these traditions. So many tournaments don’t have such important traditions. Wimbledon’s so unique, I love it.’
Traditionalist: Roger Federer thinks the schedule should be left as it is
Roger Federer
‘They’ve never done it except when they had super rain here over a lot of years and no roof. A rest day has some positives, to have Sunday completely off for everybody. Just sort of shut down, no tennis. Everybody is relaxed.’
Justin Gimelstob (Ex-player, current ATP board member)
‘It really is a nice day of rest. It lets players and fans regroup and take stock of the first week. I’d be shocked if they broke with that tradition. It really epitomises these Championships.’
Against: Jamie Murray believes the courts need the day rest in between
Jamie Murray
‘To be honest, the grass courts need a day off because they get a bit of a beating. It’s nice for everyone to have a day of rest, no stress and get away from it. I’m a fan of it.’
And finally... Andrew Jarrett (referee)
‘The surface itself needs to recover. On Saturday night and Sunday morning, the courts get absolutely soaked, which they need in order to perform to their maximum in the second week.’
