Jackson clinches it for Sarries

Slick Saracens
killed off Glasgow
Warriors' European
dream last
night after the
hosts produced an
error-strewn display.
Sean Lineen's team had
only themselves to blame
after two moments of
madness cost them the game
as Saracens secured a home
tie in the Heineken Cup
quarter-finals.
The first clanger came from
winger Hefin O'Hare who
misjudged a speculative kick
from fly half Glen Jackson.
As he tried to usher the ball
over the dead-ball line,
Saracens winger Richard
Haughton showed great
opportunism to dive on the
loose ball for the game's first
try after four minutes.
The second rush of blood
came when Johnny Beattie's
pass was intercepted superbly
by Jackson who strolled in for
Saracens second try to put
them in control.
Glasgow had to secure a
bonus point win to make it
into the quarter-finals and
for that to happen they had
to score four tries, but they
never came close.
Dan Parks'
penalty kicking and Bernardo Stortoni's solitary secondhalf
effort — when Kevin
Tkachuk and Thom Evans
combined slickly to create the
space and time for the Argentine
to finish in style — was all
they had to show for a
spirited display.
But Glasgow had no answer
to the elegant Jackson who
controlled the game for long
periods in front of a club
record crowd of 5,213.
Indeed, Saracens always
looked in control but they
also showed ineptitude of
their own in front of the line.
Their main culprit was
Brent Russell who fumbled
the ball only a few yards from
the Glasgow try line in the
closing stages with nobody
near him. If the visitors had
taken that chance they
would have saved themselves
a nervous last few minutes.
Saracens skipper Neil De
Kock said: The quarter-finals
were always our aim and now
we can think about going
even further with a home
tie.'
In the other Pool Four game last night, Biarritz
ensured hapless Viadana
remained winless as they ran
out 25-16 winners at the Parc
des Sports Aguilera.
USA winger Takudzwa
Ngwenya ran in two of the
h o s t s ' f o u r t r i e s , w i t h
Jacques Cronje and Manuel
Carizza adding the other
touchdowns and Marcelo
Bosch kicking one conversion
and a penalty.
Calvin Howarth was the
star for the Italians, scoring
one converted try and landing
three conversions.
