Worcester full-back Lee Best needs surgery on his hip and is expected to be ruled out of competitive action until the new year.
Best, 28, tore a cartilage in his left hip during pre-season training, and he will go under the knife next week.
Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock said: "This is a blow for Lee and a blow for the club as we're about to embark on a demanding new campaign."
Best made 18 appearances for Warriors last season after joining from Bath.
