David Lanigan,
assistant to Henry
Cecil for five years,
is to start training at
Newmarket in October.
The 33-year-old Irishman is the
son of Bob Lanigan, the former
general manager of Coolmore
Stud and still a consultant there.

Lanigan will start training at
Revida Place on the Hamilton
Road where Giles Bravery is the
currently based. Bravery will be
moving elsewhere.
Lanigan said: "I have a lot of
promises from people like the
Plantation Stud to send me
horses. It seemed the right time
to start up. I have had a fantastic
experience working for Henry."
Lanigan picked the victory of
Light Shift in this year's Oaks as
a highlight.
He added: "You'll
never again hear a reception like
the one accorded to Henry. I'm
staying in England, rather than
going back to Ireland, because of
the great facilities here at Newmarket
allied to the fact that we
race seven days a week against
four in Ireland."
Cecil, who reports that Musidora
Stakes winner Passage of
Time (eighth in the Oaks) is
back in work after problems with an abcess in her throat, believes
Lanigan will make a success of
his new career.
Cecil said: "It is a difficult job.
You need good horses when you
start and they make good trainers.
Passage of Time lost weight
after the Oaks when she couldn't
breathe. She is over that and,
hopefully, we are on course for
the Juddmonte International or
the Yorkshire Oaks. Light Shift is
on course for the Nassau Stakes
(at Goodwood next week)."
Meanwhile, Pat Gilligan has
handed in his licence after nearly
10 years as a Newmarket trainer.
Last week his string was reduced
to five horses. Gilligan had
trained four winners this season
largely thanks to the exploits of
sprinter Brunelleschi.
