Handball: Your guide to the Scandinavian-dominated sport
Throw the best elements of football and basketball together, sprinkle a hint of netball and you have handball.
A thrill-a-minute team sport which begun life on outdoor playing fields - appearing for the first game at the Olympics in 1936 - but became an indoor spectacle in time for the Games in Munich 1972.
The sport was developed in Denmark, Sweden and Germany in the late 19th century and it is the Scandinavian nations which enter 2012 among the favourites.
