Aston Villa are braced for interest in Douglas Luiz next month but are ready to fend off any bids for their star midfielder in mid-season.

Luiz has been one of the best performers in the division this term and was influential again last Saturday as Villa defeated Arsenal, who had three offers for Luiz turned down in summer 2022.

Villa’s 1-0 victory means they are two points off leaders Liverpool after they also defeated Manchester City by the same scoreline last week.

Premier League clubs have voted in favour of limiting the length of new contracts being signed by players to a maximum of five years at today's shareholders meeting.

The topic was on the agenda at today's meeting in light of Chelsea's heavy spending since Todd Boehly arrived at the club last year.

The Blues have spent £1bn over the past 18 months, but have managed to adhere to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules by handing a number of their players long-term contracts of up to eight years to spread the cost across a longer period.

Destiny Udogie has signed a new six-and-a-half-year deal with Tottenham just three months after making his Premier League debut.

The contract extension will keep the Italy international under contract with Spurs until the summer of 2030.

Udogie, who turned 21 at the end of November, signed for Spurs from Udinese in the summer of 2022 for £15million but remained on loan to the Serie A side for the whole of last season.

Chelsea are set for a tense Premier League shareholders meeting today, with their rivals set to push for a cap on contract amortisation rules, according to reports.

The Blues have spent £1bn since Todd Boehly arrived at the club, but have managed to adhere to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules by handing a number of their players long-term contracts of up to eight years to spread the cost across a longer period.

UEFA closed this loophole in June by introducing a five-year limit for the spread of transfer fees, but confirmed that long-term contracts that had already been signed would not be affected.

Chelsea pulled out of signing Brazil starlet Endrick at the last minute because Todd Boehly did not want to shell out £51.4million for him, it has emerged.

The Blues had agreed a deal after bringing Endrick, then 16, to tour Stamford Bridge and their Cobham training ground and see some senior players in November 2022.

However, Endrick's father told the Guardian that Boehly backed out of the transfer at the last minute because he did not want to 'inflate the market'.

Jurgen Klopp has made a cheeky dig at summer targets Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, claiming that Liverpool were 'lucky' to miss out on the pair.

The German manager made the comments at a test event for the opening of the club's newly expanded Anfield Road stand, addressing a crowd of approximately 7,000 from the pitch.

In the summer window, Liverpool saw midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho leave the club and had gone head-to-head with Chelsea to sign Caicedo and Lavia, who snubbed the Reds before ultimately joining Chelsea for a combined fee of £168million.

Jadon Sancho has been offered to Barcelona in a shock transfer swap deal that could see a former Leeds favourite return to the Premier League, according to reports in Spain.

The winger has been in exile from the first team since his public dispute with Erik ten Hag in September.

The former Borussia Dortmund star, who joined the Red Devils for £73million in 2021, hit out at Ten Hag on social media after the manager claimed he was not working hard enough in training, and tensions have since reached boiling point following the winger's refusal to apologise.

The England midfield player has 18 months left on his contract and failure to agree terms over the next few weeks could lead to his shock departure midway through the season.

Gallagher has yet to be formally offered a new deal and there is little sign of negotiations progressing.
