Rumford close to Euro quick round record

Australian Brett Rumford missed out on an unofficial European Tour record by
five minutes today when he raced round Wentworth in less than two hours.
First man out at 7am in the rain-soaked final round of the BMW PGA Championship
the 29-year-old from Perth had only a lady scorer for company as he completed a
five over par 77 in 113 minutes.

Rumford handed in his scorecard before 9am while the group behind were only
just starting the back nine and before 50 of the 75 players had even teed off.
The record-holder remains Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, who took 108 minutes for a
closing 71 at the Scottish Open last July, but Rumford was 10 minutes faster
than former Open champions John Daly and Mark Calcavecchia, who in 1992 were
fined for playing too quickly at the Players Championship in Florida.
The problem there was that Daly scored 80, Calcavecchia 81 and the US Tour
officials took the view that if they had tried harder they could have done
better.
The fastest-ever golf round is listed as being played in 1981 by American mile
and 1,500-metre record-holder Steve Scott. He shot a 92 in covering a course in
an amazing 29 minutes 33 seconds.
