Stoner moved 10 points clear in the championship as previous leader Valentino
Rossi could only finish 10th in Turkey on the Fiat Yamaha, three places behind
reigning champion Nicky Hayden on the Repsol Honda.
British teenager Bradley Smith had the best ride of his career before
eventually having to settle for eighth place in the 125cc class.
Smith was lying eighth in the closing stages when he reduced the gap on the
seven-rider leading group and was in contention for fifth at one point.
But a clash with another rider on the final lap as Smith tried to take fifth
on the Repsol Honda meant he had to drop to eighth, equalling his best race
finish.
After a poor qualifying session which had seen him line up outside the top 10
on the grid it was a good response from Smith.
He said: "I don't know what went wrong yesterday. I came out this morning and
felt really positive.
"I had a few moments catching the group in front.
"I was a little bit gutted. It was so close to being an awesome race but it
was still great. I could smell it, it was so close.
"The team worked on the engine, the gearbox and me last night and it
certainly paid off. For next time (in the same situation) I have learnt a little
more what to do in that situation."
The 125 cc race was won by Simone Corsi (Aprilia) as Scottish teenager Kev
Coughlan was an impressive 21st on only his second GP appearance and Danny Webb
was 23rd.
The 250cc race was a three-way battle in the closing stages before Andrea
Dovizioso snatched the win on the last lap on the Humangest Honda after getting
the better of championship leader Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) and Alvaro
Bautista (Aspar Aprilia).
