The MK Dons boss is believed to have met Southampton officials for talks today about taking over the Championship club, according to the London Evening Standard.
The former Manchester United and West Ham midfielder has taken the MK Dons to the top of League Two this season, but the approach from Southampton is a surprise.
Glenn Hoddle and Chris Coleman have both been strongly linked with the post, but Ince's odds of getting the job were slashed this afternoon from 25-1 to 7-2.
Burley, meanwhile, was today unveiled as Scotland's new coach.
The former Ipswich boss said: "To be manager of my country is a great honour. My dream is to qualify for the World Cup."
