How England rated
Last updated at 23:02 08 September 2007
Paul Robinson 6/10
Steve McClaren kept faith with his keeper but Robinson had
no opportunity to reward his manager as he had little to do.
Only a good late punch to trouble him.
Micah Richards 8/10
Firm in defence when he had to be and
formed good understanding with Shaun
Wright-Phillips. Strong header to score.
John Terry 6/10
Unflustered when called upon. Showed
more inclination than Ferdinand to venture
forward into midfield.
Rio Ferdinand 6/10
Put under little pressure. Might have
stepped out of defence a little more to
prevent Gerrard and Barry dropping deep.
Ashley Cole 6/10
After a shaky start, with some poor crosses
and passing, gradually posed more of a
threat and was denied goal only by a
decent save in the 41st minute.
Shaun Wright-Phillips 8/10
David who? If Wright-Phillips carries on
playing like this, Beckham need never
board a transatlantic flight again. Great
finish for goal and a constant threat.
Steven Gerrard 7/10
Too deep early on, but his pass started
move for SWP's goal. Some decent
dead-balls, but passing was hit and miss.
Gareth Barry 8/10
Nervous early on, but grew into the game
wonderfully and found some good angles
with his passing. Highest compliment is that
Hargreaves and Lampard were not missed.
Joe Cole 7/10
After a poor start, created first goal with
first decent cross of the game and did not
look back.
Michael Owen 7/10
A fully functioning Owen would have
scored from one of his two efforts in the
37th minute. But control and half-volley for
his goal were sheer class.
Emile Heskey 8/10
Welcome back. Dominated the Israeli
defence with a muscular, intelligent
display of how to be a target man.
--------------------------------------
Phil Neville 6/10
(for Gerrard, 70 mins)
Workmanlike, which was all that was required.
Andrew Johnson 7/10
(for Heskey, 70 mins)
A hard act to follow, but ran hard.
David Bentley 6/10
(for Wright-Phillips, 81 mins)
Booed for missing Under-21 Championship.
----------------------------------------
Steve McClaren 8/10
Major decision to recall Heskey was justified by
the striker's display. England played with a
purpose and commitment which recalled the
heady days of his honeymoon period.
