Bradford 0 Yeovil 2
Two-goal match-winner Arron
Davies was brought crashing
down to earth by perfectionist
Yeovil boss Russell Slade.
Davies struck in each half to seal
Yeovil’s first-ever win against
Bradford and push the in-form
West Country side up to fourth.
The attacking midfielder took
his season’s tally to five, but Slade
— who is close to landing Stoke
winger Peter Sweeney on loan for
the rest of the season — said:
"Arron took his goals well, but
really he could have had a
hat-trick. If we’d had a little more
composure in front of goal we
could have scored more but this
is still a great result." Davies broke the deadlock after five minutes,
latching on to Anthony Barry’s
pass to fire beyond keeper
Donovan Ricketts.
The lead was doubled on
67 minutes, Davies following
up to score from a narrow angle
after David Wetherall had only
half-cleared.
Bradford’s Jermaine Johnson
was ordered off 10 minutes from
time to end any comeback hopes,
the Jamaican striker earning a
straight red card for his protests
as sub Eddie Johnson’s effortwas
controversially ruled offside.
Brentford 0 Carlisle 0
Neil Shipperley made his debut for
rock-bottom Brentford, but manager Scott
Fitzgerald says the veteran striker will need better service to make an impact.
Despite the presence of the 32-year-old former
Sheffield United, Southampton, Crystal Palace
and Chelsea player, Brentford failed to create a
single clear-cut chance.
Fitzgerald said: "I think Neil’s going to be a very good signing. He has scored loads of goals from crosses in his career, but if we check back and play safe, he is not going to find the net."
Carlisle hit the post through Karl Hawley in the
first half and could have snatched victory at the
end when substitute Joe Garner drilled wide from
the best chance of the match.
Brighton 0 Port Vale 0
Brighton went achingly close to their first
home win in seven weeks when striker Jake
Robinson shot just wide after the break and was
later brilliantly denied by Vale keeper Joe Anyon.
Boss Dean Wilkins saluted the home support,
saying: "The fans have been magnificent. At least
they’re seeing lots of effort and determination."
Vale’s effort satisfied manager Martin Foyle as
this was only their second point in six games.
Crewe 0 Leyton Orient 4
Leyton Orient boss Martin Ling admitted he
is still on the lookout for another striker despite watching his side thrash sorry Crewe.
Adam Chambers and Wayne Corden netted
either side of half-time, before Jabo Ibehre and
Shane Tudor completed the rout as Orient ended
their six-game winless streak.
But Ling, who has been frustrated in his effort to
sign a forward, said: "It doesn’t move the goalposts and we are still gutted about not being able to
sign a striker. The fact is we still need to get one in."
Crewe boss Dario Gradi said: "I blame our keeper
for three of the goals and there is nothing you can do about that."
Doncaster 3 Rotherham 2
Rotherham boss Alan Knill blamed poor
defending for the defeat that plunged his side
deeper into relegation danger.
Knill said: "We showed the right passion, commitment
and pride but it’s no good if you concede
goals like that. For us to get out of the
position we’re in,we have to defend better."
Richie Partridge fired the visitors in front with a
superb volley on 10 minutes but Paul Heffernan
headed Doncaster level two minutes later.
Graeme Lee made it 2-1 to Rovers following a
corner early in the second half and Heffernan
added a third in the 59th minute. Although
Martin Woods pulled one back after 71 minutes it
was Doncaster who finished well on top.
Manager Sean O’Driscoll said: "We showed great
belief to come from behind against the league
leaders the previous week and we did it again
against a team that played better than their
position might suggest."
Huddersfield 1 Chesterfield 1
Chesterfield boss Roy McFarland
believes his side can stay in League One
without striker Caleb Folan who signed for
Wigan on Friday. McFarland said: "We have
enough firepower to climb the league."
On-loan Kyle Critchell found Peter
Holmes to head home in the 23rd minute,
but eight minutes after the restart Matty
Young scored his first Huddersfield goal
and his side could have gone on to win.
Huddersfield boss Peter Jackson said:
"I don’t know why we need the shock of
going behind before we start playing."
Scunthorpe 3 Millwall 0
It is hard to believe that just three years ago
Millwall were on their way to an FA Cup Final
and Scunthorpe were teetering on the brink of
relegation to the Conference.
Now the club that used to be a music hall joke
are confounding the critics as they zoom towards
the Championship while Millwall are in danger of
dropping to the bottom rung of the league ladder
for the first time since the swinging Sixties.
Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins said: "People
keep expecting the bubble to burst, but we are
top of the table on merit, holding off the big clubs
with bigger budgets and we are just enjoying the
ride. Don’t tell my players they can’t go up
because they simply won’t give up on the dream
and who knows where it can take us?"
Millwall boss Willie Donachie remained
optimistic despite the reverse. He said:
"Scunthorpe are a very strong side, good all round
and without a weakness. I believe they can hold
off Forest, Bristol City and the rest to go up, but as
for us, I’m convinced we are moving along the
right lines and can only get better."
In truth, Millwall were rarely in the game.
Scunthorpe keeper, Joe Murphy had only a couple
of saves to make in the last minute of the first half
from Tom Brighton and Neil Harris, while Lenny
Pidgeley was being peppered left, right and centre at the other end.
Jermaine Beckford, on loan from Leeds, missed
three chances before scoring on 79 minutes by
which time Scunthorpe were well in command
thanks to Jim Goodwin’s 50th-minute opener and
an Andy Crosby penalty three minutes later.
