Ferdinand boost for Hammers

West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand will be fit for the start of the new Barclays Premiership season after a scan on his injured hamstring showed only a minor strain.

The 21-year-old limped off 25 minutes into Saturday's 2-1 friendly defeat to Gothenburg and returned to London on Sunday. The scan indicated Ferdinand has suffered only a grade-one strain of his hamstring and he will be back training within a fortnight.

West Ham's head physio, Steve Allen, said: "The injury is not as bad as we initially thought. Anton is now back at Chadwell Heath (training ground) undergoing intensive physiotherapy, and we are looking forward to seeing him resume full training soon."

West Ham open their season at against Charlton at Upton Park on August 19.

Ferdinand could also be available for the England Under-21 European Championships qualifier against Moldova on August 16.
