Gareth Southgate has warned Tottenham not to bother pursuing England winger Stewart Downing.
Spurs boss Martin Jol had a £7million offer turned down last summer and he is ready to make a fresh approach for the 21-year-old World Cup winger.
But new Middlesbrough manager Southgate insists he intends to build his side around Downing and turn the youngster into an England regular while at the Riverside.
He said: "I'm not surprised clubs are being linked with Stewart. He's a superb player and I want to help him progress. I want to make sure he gets more experiences like he's had this summer."
Southgate is keen on Fulham's Steed Malbranque but is becoming impatient with the lack of progress. Fulham and Boro want to tie up a deal but the 26-year-old midfielder is reluctant to move.
Germany centre back Robert Huth underwent his medical at Middlesbrough's training ground yesterday and should complete a £5million move from Chelsea this week.
