Arsenal on alert as Werder Bremen reveal Mertesacker could be sold in the summer
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER
Arsenal are set to renew their interest in Germany defender Per Mertesacker.
The 26-year-old is out of contract next summer, and Werder Bremen are keen to cash in on the £10million-rated defender.
Heads, you win: Mertesacker was linked with a move to Arsenal last summer
Arsene Wenger was heavily linked with a move for Mertesacker last summer, but failed to negotiate terms with Bundesliga club.
But Arsenal's failings at the back this season will prompt the Frenchman into reopening transfer dealings for the 6ft 6in defender at the end of the season.
And Werder Bremen, who are currently 12th in the league, have hinted they are ready to discuss a deal for Metresacker, who's been capped 73 times by Germany.

'If you are not going to hand out an extension to an outrunning contract then you need to know all the possibilities available to you,' Werder's general manager Klaus Allofs said.
'As soon as we are aware of our fate in the Bundesliga this spring, we are going to clarify [the situation] with these contracts. 'We will be in talks.'
