CARLING CUP LIVE: Mk Dons knock out Blackpool while Northampton leave it very late to shock Reading - as it happened

The Barclays Premier League big boys join the rest in round two of the Carling Cup, starting with tonight's matches. Keep track of all the latest news from around the grounds with Sportsmail's Dan Ripley.

22.50: Brentford, Notts County and Peterborough may have caused upsets in their wins tonight, but the round (so far at least) belongs to Blackpool and Northampton.

Blackpool for being the first and thus only side to take a Premier League scalp and to Northampton for snatching the latest of equalisers and then dumping a side two leagues above them out on penalties.

Thank you for following what has been a goal packed evening, that's all from me.

22.46: The fairytale is complete. Northampton seconds from going out in extra-time have defeated Reading 4-3 on penalties. Unbelievable, an often over used word, but this really is.

22.41: Penalties already under way, and Northampton lead 2-1 after a couple of penalties from either side.

22.40: There was me thinking the night was over, what a story this would be if League Two Northampton can knock out Reading from here.

22.34: GOAL! Reading 3-3 Northampton

How late can you leave it?! This is the last attack of the game, Oskar Jansson the Northampton keeper has even gone up for it, but it's Reading's Matt Mills who turns from hero to zero after scoring an own goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Penalties it is.

22.32: Just Reading and Northampton still playing, we are in stoppage time in extra-time any time for another fairytale come back from Town?

22.31: Portsmouth prevail though winning 4-3 on penalties, Richard Hughes converting the winning penalty.

22.27: Penalties are being missed all over the place at Fratton Park, Score's are 3-3 and we are in to sudden death.

22.25: Blackpool are the first Premier League side out then, falling to the Mk Dons in what was a fantastic game.

22.23: GOAL! Reading 3-2 Northampton

Against the run of play Matt Mills has fired the home side in front at extra-time, just five minutes left for Town to hit back.

22.22: GOAL! Wolves 2-1 Southend

Richard Stearman has won it with what is the last kick of the game in extra-time and that is the heartbreak to end all heartbreaks for Southend.

22.20: Preston have also held on, and are probably  fortunate to escape with a win, North End's class with the winner the differnce between the two sides.

22.18: Ipswich Town won't need penalties though, Norris' goal has seen them through in extra time at Crewe.

22.16: Looks like three games are heading for penalties then, the drama just doesn't stop in the Carling Cup.

19.30: Good evening, round two of the Carling Cup is upon us which means the arrival of the big boys from the Premier League.

None of last seasons Euro qualifiers play in this round though, with Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Liverpool already in the hat for Round three.

That doesn't mean we don't have any potential 'cupsets' this evening, with 21 games being played tonight, good ol' law of averages should spring up a surprise somewhere.
