Somerset strengthened
their LV County
Championship promotion
bid by dominating the
opening day against
Northamptonshire at
Taunton.
Asked to bat first on a
green pitch the visitors
were dismissed for 221.
Steven Crook top scored
with 60, while Andy
Caddick (three for 70) took
his first-class wicket tally
for the season to 47.

By the time bad light and
drizzle ended play early,
Somerset openers Marcus
Trescothick (31 not out)
and Neil Edwards (42 not
out) had replied with an
unbroken stand of 77.
Northants were on the
back foot from the
moment Caddick struck in
the eighth over of the day.
Chris Rogers was lbw
swinging across the line
and Caddick then trapped
Usman Afzaal leg before.
Stephen Peters edged
Charl Willoughby to
Trescothick at second slip
and Caddick claimed his
third wicket with an
identical dismissal to send
back David Sales for 17.
Riki Wessels hit six fours in
his 37 before falling lbw to
Steffan Jones, who had
Lance Klusener caught
behind for a duck.
Alex Wakely, 18, battled
away for 88 balls on his
debut, hitting eight fours
in his 38 before being
pinned lbw by Peter Trego
with the total on 157.
Trego followed up by
having Johannes van der
Wath caught by
wicketkeeper Craig
Kieswetter.
After a sketchy start,
Crook produced the most
positive batting of the
Northants innings, striking
10 fours in his 82-ball
innings.
It was ended by another
Kieswetter catch off
Cameron White's leg spin,
which also accounted for
last man Jason Brown.
In the only other
Championship game in
which play was possible,
Mushtaq Ahmed claimed
five for 91 as Sussex
dismissed Durham for 209
at Horsham.
The home side had
reached 134 for three in
reply at stumps.
