Injured Vaughan to miss first Test
England today ruled injured captain Michael Vaughan out of the first Test against Pakistan and confirmed Marcus Trescothick will lead the side in Multan.
Vaughan, who twisted his right knee against Pakistan 'A' on Monday and had to retire hurt, has not recovered in time to play on Saturday.
Vice-captain Trescothick, who replaced Vaughan in similar circumstances for last year's Test victory over New Zealand at Lord's, was the obvious choice to stand in again.
A statement from the ECB read: "The England medical team have today confirmed that Michael Vaughan will miss the first Test against Pakistan in Multan, starting on Saturday, with a knee injury.
"Michael will continue to receive treatment, and further updates on his progress will be issued in due course.
"The England selectors have appointed Marcus Trescothick as captain for the first Test in Michael Vaughan's absence.
"He will continue to lead the side if Vaughan is unavailable for any remaining matches on the tour."
Trescothick said: "Michael has a superb record as captain, and to lose him for the first Test is a major blow.
"But we can take strength from the fact that we have played some outstanding cricket over the past 18 months and we are all up for the challenge on Saturday.
"For me personally it is always a great honour to lead your country.
"I have fond memories of doing the job before against New Zealand at Lord's in 2004, and I am happy to take on the responsibility again."
