Ryan Garcia had some clear advice for Oscar De La Hoya during his gaffe at the press conference for his return to boxing.

The American, 26, has not fought since he beat Devin Haney last April, only for the result to later be ruled a no contest after he tested positive for the banned substance ostarine.

Garcia claimed he was the victim of 'contamination', but accepted a one-year ban and forfeited his $1.2m (£1m) purse. His comeback fight will be against former world champion Rolando Romero in Times Square, New York on May 2.

And at the press conference for the event, Garcia's promoter De La Hoya nearly dropped his foot in it while speaking to an audience with cruder minds than his own.

The former world champion said of Garcia: 'It's going to be about a year now and he's hungry. He's hungry to get on top, to be world champion.'

De La Hoya's comments were interrupted by audible gasps in the New York crowd. Clearly confused by what he could have said to cause the reaction, the 52-year-old turned towards Garcia.

'Oh s*** pause, man, you forgot to say pause, man so it's no Diddy. Big drama, big drama,' Garcia replied.

His intervention drew laughter from the audience before De La Hoya added: 'My bad, my bad. Alright, alight . He's ready to get on top of the boxing world.

'Not putting on the oil or anything, you know.'

The former boxer's comments a day after he slammed Joe Rogan for refusing to allow him to come on his podcast. Rogan had accused De La Hoya of being 'off the rails' in his latest rant, while claiming that he also had 'fake abs'.

Responding on Instagram to Rogan, De La Hoya said: 'Really? Let's take a look at your evolution over the last 15 years'.

He then proceeded to show a series of clips of the MMA commentator ageing over the past two decades.

In a pointed retort, the boxing star added: 'Man, I'm glad I cleaned up my life and got off the f***ing drugs'.

He also claimed that Rogan had a 'contract' that requires him to 'stay hating' on the man who was nicknamed 'The Golden Boy of Boxing'.

The 1992 Olympic lightweight champion advised him to 'stop being petty' for 'refusing to put [de la Hoya] on his podcast'.
