Equestrianism: Smith takes first Euro test in his stride
by BRIAN GILES, Daily Mail
Promising young British rider Scott Smith will be looking to build on an already successful season when he competes in his first European Championship in Holland tomorrow.
The opposition will be of the highest calibre but the talented 26-year-old refuses to see that as anything other than a challenge.
'It's a great opportunity and I am not fazed by it,' said Smith. 'I am there to do a job and I will do it to the best of my ability.'
Smith, who was Britain's leading pony rider in 1991, is now trained by the vastly experienced Nick Skelton, who won a total of 19 medals for Britain before his illustrious showjumping career ended when he broke his neck last year.
Smith, from Doncaster, is quick to acknowledge his mentor's influence. 'He has done a great deal for me, showing me how the whole system works and steering me in the right direction. I cannot thank him enough.'
Smith has already hit the headlines this season with top wins abroad, including the King's Cup in Madrid and the Grand Prix in Barcelona.
Other members of Britain's European Championship squad who will be going for gold are Michael Whitaker, Mark Armstrong, Andrew Davies and Di Lampard.
Team captain is Michael Bullman, who took over after Ronnie Massarella retired last year.
