Brother, look at me now

There was a Murray
lifting a trophy on Centre
Court on the final
day of the Wimbledon
championships to
supply the British sporting
public with the fairytale
finale they have been fantasising
about for months.
But it was Jamie stepping out of
the shadow of his younger brother
Andy as he and Jelena Jankovic
beat Tomas Bjorkman and Alicia
Molik 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 to win the mixed
doubles final.
Scroll down to read more:
Murray senior became the first
British Wimbledon winner since
Jeremy Bates and Jo Durie in the
mixed doubles 20 years ago, and
his brother was courtside to share
the moment.
Andy, the British No 1, who was
forced to miss Wimbledon with a
wrist injury, raised both fists into
the air as the match was secured.
"Andy was really pumped up. I
saw him as I left the court and he
said he was so proud of what I've
done," said 21-year-old Jamie, who
received a hug from his 20-year-old
brother, before heading off to the
Champions Ball with Jankovic and
the promise of many kisses from
his Serbian mixed doubles partner.
"I was motivating him every time
by saying if you get this point you
will get many kisses and he did it,"
said Jankovic. "This is what I had
to do to pump him up to play great tennis. It was amazing. It has been
a great experience playing with
Jamie and he is pretty sweet.
"He was asking me all day what
dress I will be wearing for the ball
and whether it would be short or
long. Well, I have to disappoint him
because it is very long."
Unseeded, Murray and Jankovic
teamed up only just before
Wimbledon but struck an instant
understanding and their combination
of styles has worked perfectly.
Jankovic was supreme in the
final. Strong and athletic, she
stepped into Bjorkman's fierce
serve with relish and produced a
sequence of delicious groundstrokes.
Home favourite Murray lived up
to his nickname 'Stretch' with
some great speed, anticipation and
elasticity at the net.
With such chemistry, there's no
wonder rumours of romance have
been quick to follow their success
on court as they laugh and giggle
and whisper tactics behind their
hands like playground sweethearts.
The high-fives they
exchange after a winner seem to
contain a little extra tenderness.
'Come on Mrs Murray' came an
excited cry from near the back of
the stands. But asked afterwards
whether she had a boyfriend,
Jankovic said: "I have lots."
The pair had walked out to a near
empty arena, with most of the
Centre Court crowd off seeking
refreshment after Roger Federer
had rewritten history in the men's
singles, but the atmosphere soon
warmed up as supporters returned
to their seats.
Fifth seeds Bjorkman and Molik
had started the day on Court 13,
beating Fabrice Santoro and Severine
Bremond in a three-set semifinal.
They broke Murray's serve to
take an early lead in the final but
soon surrendered the initiative.
A Murray ace produced two set
points and the Scot followed it up
with a precision lob which Bjorkman,
scampering to the baseline,
could only slap into the net.
The smiles continued, even when
Bjorkman and Molik took the second
set to level. Murray and
Jankovic won the first two games
of the third without dropping a
point and then they came back
from 0-40 down to hold the
Jankovic serve. Then they coasted
home from here. "He loves you
Jelena' came another cry from the
stands and Jankovic creased up
with laughter. Even her mother
applauded the idea.
It fell to Jankovic to served out
for the match and she did so without
fuss. Bjorkman and Molik
became the fifth pair of seeds to fall
victim to the scratch partnership.
Murray said: "I never dared to
think I would win a Grand Slam
tournament, let alone in the mixed
doubles, but it's happened and I'm
loving it."
Such a happy ending had seemed
impossible two weeks ago as the
British men and women were
rapidly skittled out of the singles'
competitions in between the rain.
