Former Wimbledon champion Martina
Hingis insisted yesterday that she will
not be taking British teenager Naomi
Cavaday lightly when the pair square up
for their high-noon showdown at the All
England Club today.
Hingis, the 1997 women's singles winner,
has been out with a thigh injury since
the Berlin Open in early May.

After a highly frustrating spell on the
sidelines, Hingis admitted she is all the
more intent not to be on the end of a
giant-killing and will be leaving nothing
to chance against an unknown force
such as 18-year-old Cavaday.
"The injury set me back a little bit and I
haven't had the matches I wish I'd had,
but I'm excited just to be able to run and
play," said the five-time grand slam
winner.
"I have no plans about the girl I'm
playing because I haven't seen her, I haven't ever played her before and
she's a wild card, a British hope I guess.
"I'm going to enjoy the moment because
I'm just happy to play at Wimbledon. It'll
be a good match and will hopefully live
up to the expectations."
Cavaday is still only ranked 232 in the
world and had to be granted a wild card
for Wimbledon, but she is a powerful
left-hander with real promise — a rare
attribute among young British women
players these days.
She will be hoping to build on last year's
encouraging first-round performance
against world No 27 Ai Sugiyama, to
whom she lost a hard-fought encounter
6-4, 7-5.
Cavaday's match is on Court 2, but British
No 1 Anne Keothavong will have the
experience of playing on Centre Court as
she takes on third seed Jelena Jankovic
in the third match.
