1878: Two local teams took part in the first football match under floodlights at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.
1996: Mark Bosnich, then of Aston Villa, was charged with misconduct by the Football Association after his Basil Fawlty impersonation at Tottenham, which had angered Spurs' Jewish following. The Australian claimed he had not realised his Nazi-style salute had been offensive.
1998: England's laboured attempts to reach Euro 2000 saw them crawl past part-timers Luxembourg 3-0. The home side missed a penalty after five minutes while Michael Owen, Alan Shearer and Gareth Southgate scored the goals.

2000: Jim McLean resigned as chairman and managing director of Dundee United following the fall-out from a violent altercation with a television reporter during a live interview.
2004: Australia spinner Shane Warne equalled the record for most wickets in Test cricket by claiming his 532nd scalp in the second Test against India. He ended his Test career with 708 wickets.
2005: Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane announced he was to quit international football. He has since retired as a player, after a short spell at Celtic, and manages Sunderland.
2007: South Africa beat Argentina 37-13 to set up a rematch with England in the rugby union World Cup final. The Springboks went on to beat Brian Ashton's side to claim the global crown.
