On this day in sport - October 9
1928: Two years after becoming the first man to hit three home runs in a World Series game, Babe Ruth repeated the feat, hitting three 'homers' against the St Louis Cardinals, the same team who were on the receiving end in 1926.
1988: Jackie Milburn, one of Newcastle's greatest players and scorer of both goals in their 1951 FA Cup win, died aged 64.
1998: The Football Association were fined 60,000 Swiss francs by UEFA for racist chanting by England fans towards Sweden's Henrik Larsson and damage caused to the Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm by supporters after a 2-1 defeat in a Euro 2000 qualifier.
1999: St Helens were crowned Super League champions after beating Bradford Bulls 8-6 in the Grand Final at Old Trafford.
2004: England beat Wales 2-0 in their World Cup qualifier at Old Trafford but the win was marred by a booking and a hairline rib fracture for captain David Beckham, who later admits deliberately earning his yellow card to ensure suspension for the following week's qualifier against Azerbaijan.
2005: Steven Gerrard was ruled out of England's World Cup group decider against Poland with a shin injury.
2006: Snooker professional Paul Hunter, who won three Wembley Masters titles, died at the age of 27 after a battle with cancer.

2007: Marion Jones returns all five Olympic medals she captured during the 2000 Games in Sydney after admitting taking performance-enhancing steroids and lying under oath in the BALCO investigations.
