WHAT ARE THE SIX EMOTIONAL CLUSTERS USED IN FILMS?

Researchers from the University of Birmingham looked at the scripts from films and analysed their emotional clusters.

They compiled a final dataset of 6,147 films with complete scripts, as well as information about each film including gross domestic revenue in the country of first release.

They split each script into sentences and calculated the sentimental value of every sentence from -1 (emotionally negative) to 1 (emotionally positive).

They then matched the sentence to the films timing and created an emotional 'profile' for each film.

There were six emotional profiles in total:

1) Rags to Riches: ‘An ongoing emotional rise’ 

Examples: The Shawshank Redemption, Groundhog Day, The Nightmare Before Christmas

2) Riches to Rags: ‘An ongoing emotional fall’ 

Examples: Psycho, Love story, Toy Story 3

3) Man in a Hole: ‘A fall followed by a rise’ 

Examples: The Godfather, The Departed, Blade Runner

4) Icarus: ‘A rise followed by a fall’

Examples: On the Waterfront, Mary Poppins, A Very Long Engagement

5) Cinderella: ‘Rise-fall-rise’ 

Examples: Rushmore, Babe, Spider-Man 2

6) Oedipus: ‘Fall-rise-fall’ 

Examples: All About My Mother, As Good as It Gets, The Little Mermaid
