Magical: Journey's unique visuals are a much-needed breath of fresh air
THERE are no guns in this game. No battle-hardened protagonists who shoot first, ask questions later. There are no headshots, grenades or weapons to upgrade. And there are no explosions.
Actually, I take that last one back. Because the explosions come in the form of mini bursts of delight with every step you take on the simple, yet enthralling Journey (available to download from the PlayStation Network).
Dropped into the middle of a vast desert, you take on the role of a nameless robed traveller. Your goal is to reach a bright light at the top of a distant mountain, and this is where the magic begins.
The controls feel wonderfully light yet responsive as you bound around the sand and smoothly slide down the dunes.
Add to this some graceful gliding and you have a rather joyous way of exploring the epic gaming environments that await you.
Sand and deliver: This game is an unforgettable experience for all ages
As you uncover more mysterious ruins and other sandy wonders, your ability to manoeuvre improves as you add strength to a special scarf which helps you fly.
Let us not forget that every journey needs a friend along the way – and this comes in the form of instantaneous multi-player where another gamer can help you reach the mountain top.
However, your friend is a stranger, unnamed (no PSN ID) and communication only comes in the form of musical chirps.
Journey’s visual accomplishment is nothing short of astonishing. As you move through beautifully textured landscape, the sand glistens and rays of light bounce through the screen.
This is accompanied by an awe-inspiring soundtrack where the game’s makers, thatgamecompany (responsible for Flow and Flower) have designed a sensitive score that incorporates the gameplay.
Ain't no mountain high enough: But there's a long road ahead for these two
It’s hard to find fault with Journey. It’s a different sort of gaming experience but one that leaves you reveling in its ambiguity.
An enchanting ballet that delights and enthrals.
