Do YOU think people with the same name look alike? As researchers claim our faces evolve to match our names, we compare famous Ryans, Kates, Harrys, and Arianas

  • A controversial study claims that our faces evolve to match our names
  • Going by this logic, people with the same name should resemble one another

When it comes to famous men named Ryan, two names likely spring to mind - Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling.

But aside from sharing a first name, do these two stars look alike?

A controversial study published earlier this week claims that our faces evolve to match our names.

Going by this logic, people with the same name should resemble one another - but is that really the case?

We look at some of the most famous Ryans, Kates, Harrys, Arianas, and Kims to see if researchers from Reichman University really are onto something.

In the recent study, researchers set out to understand why it is that most of us can guess strangers' names correctly.

The team enlisted 9-to-10-year-old children and adults, who were asked to match faces to names.

The findings revealed that the participants - both the children and adults - correctly matched the adult faces to their names.

However, they were not as successful when it came to matching children's faces to their names.

In a second part of the study, the researchers fed a machine learning system images of human faces and their names.

An analysis of the faces revealed that those of adults with the same name were significantly more similar to each other.

Kim Kardashian is known for her black hair, brown eyes, and hourglass figure
Sex And The City star, Kim Cattrall, has blonde hair, hazel eyes, and a more rectangular figure

Despite sharing the same first name, Kim Kardashian and Kim Cattral do not look alike whatsoever

Singer Harry Styles is known for his good looks, and was even found to be one of the world's most handsome men, according to the golden ratio
It's safe to say that Prince Harry does not look like Harry Styles, despite sharing a first name

Harry Styles and Prince Harry might share a first name, but the resemblances end there

In contrast, the computer found no similarity among children with the same name.

Overall, the researchers say the findings suggest that people's faces evolve to match their names.

'Children do not look like their names yet, but adults who have lived with their name longer do tend to look like their names,' the team concluded.

'These results suggest that people develop according to the stereotype bestowed on them at birth.

'We are social creatures who are affected by nurture: One of our most unique and individual physical components, our facial appearance, can be shaped by a social factor, our name.'

Actress and singer, Ariana DeBose, has black hair and dark eyes

Made In Chelsea's Jamie Laing is known for his white-blonde hair and dazzling teeth
Chef Jamie Oliver has darker hair and a more natural smile

No one would be mistaking Made In Chelsea star, Jamie Laing, for celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver

To put this theory to the test, we compared the faces of 12 celebrities - two Ryans, two Kates, two Jamies, two Arianas, two Kims, and two Harrys.

Aside from both being Canadian, Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds do look quite similar, and are often mistaken for one another.

In fact, when he took to the stage to accept his Oscar for La La Land, Ryan Gosling joked that the Hollywood Foreign Press had got him mixed up with Reynolds.

'This isn't the first time I've been mistaken for Ryan Reynolds, but it's getting out of hand,' he said.

'Ryan, obviously there's been some kind of mistake, but I'm up here if you don't mind.'

Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, meanwhile, bears a striking resemblance to actress, Kate Beckinsale, with both boasting long, brown hair and green eyes.

However, that's just about where the similarities in our test end.

With her black hair, brown eyes, and hourglass figure, Kim Kardashian looks nothing like actress, Kim Cattral, who has has blonde hair, hazel eyes, and a more rectangular figure.

Harry Styles - who is one of the world's most handsome men, according to the golden ratio - does not look anything like Prince Harry, while Jamie Laing won't be getting mistaken for Jamie Oliver anytime soon.

Finally, despite both having naturally dark hair and eyes, Ariana DeBose and Ariana Grande have very different facial structures.

HOW DOES YOUR NAME IMPACT HOW OTHERS PERCEIVE YOU?

A number of studies have found that our names change the way people judge our personality, age and more.

In a study published May 8, scientists at Syracuse University in New York asked 500 university students to rate 400 popular names spanning 70 years.

Questions came in the format: 'Imagine that you are about to meet Samantha. How competent/warm/old do you think she is when you see her name?'

Scientists used their results to assess which names were perceieved as being competent, warm, or a combination of the two.

Below are the results:

Warm and competent names

Ann, Anna, Caroline, Daniel, David, Elizabeth, Emily, Emma, Evelyn, Felicia, Grace, James, Jennifer, John, Jonathan, Julie, Kathleen, Madeline, Mark, Mary, Matthew, Michael, Michelle, Natalie, Nicholas, Noah, Olivia, Paul, Rachel, Samantha, Sarah, Sophia, Stephen, Susan, Thomas, William

Warm but less competent names

Hailey, Hannah, Jesse, Kellie, Melody, Mia

Competent but less warm names

Arnold, Gerard, Herbert, Howard, Lawrence, Norman, Reginald, Stuart

Names of low warmth and competence
