Magical Diogo Jota will be treasured for decades at Liverpool: DANNY MURPHY pays tribute to the always-smiling fan favourite

03/07/25 12:17
DANNY MURHPHY: Whenever a young person passes away it is always devastating, heartbreaking news but when it's someone you feel so familiar with, someone you have watched and adored from afar, playing for the club you love, it always hits home a bit more. It's such horrendous and shocking news. My thoughts go out to all his friend, family and loved ones. Diogo Jota was easy to love as a football fan. He scored goals and he worked hard. He gave everything on the pitch and always had knack of popping up with a crucial finish. Whenever you do both those things, it's only natural you become a fan favourite. And Jota was certainly one of them....read

Mo Salah's been magic but Virgil van Dijk is the main man for Liverpool, writes DANNY MURPHY as he reflects on a special season for his old team
26/04/25 09:31DANNY MURPHY: With Jurgen Klopp gone, I thought there would be a hang-over, particularly without signings, and predicted Liverpool would finish third.
Tottenham don't go into games with a defensive plan under inflexible Ange Postecoglou and opponents love playing against them, writes DANNY MURPHY
22/04/25 09:30DANNY MURPHY: In isolation, Tottenham were not horrendous against Nottingham Forest. They were undone by two early mistakes which allowed Nuno Espirito Santo's side to sit back and defend.
Man United would be MAD to sell Kobbie Mainoo after his Lyon-taming act, writes DANNY MURPHY... Ruben Amorim must do all he can to keep him
19/04/25 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Manchester United's incredible win against Lyon on Thursday night reminded us all it would be madness to let Kobbie Mainoo leave Old Trafford.
Andre Onana has become a liability and Ruben Amorim dropping him might do the Man United goalkeeper some good, writes DANNY MURPHY
12/04/25 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Players are usually supportive of team-mates like goalkeeper Onana who are struggling for form. In training, there will be an arm around the shoulder.
DANNY MURPHY: Sorry Ange, Tottenham's unacceptable form is not sustainable - but here's the one characteristic you must show to avoid the inevitable
06/04/25 01:00DANNY MURPHY: While Angeball is good on the eye with its high intensity, it is unsustainable to play that way all the time. There are patches of brilliance, like the 4-0 win at Manchester City.
DANNY MURPHY: Players STILL love the FA Cup even if the money men don't... there is no point pretending the Club World Cup has anything like the same stature
29/03/25 10:30DANNY MURPHY: Winners of the Club World Cup will receive £97million in prize money compared to around £4m for lifting the FA Cup.

Phil Foden is a genius - but he's not the man for the job in Thomas Tuchel's England side, writes DANNY MURPHY
22/03/25 10:30DANNY MURPHY: Unlike Marcus Rashford, Foden doesn't have electric pace and it's his football intelligence, not dribbling prowess, which gets him into great positions on the pitch.
DANNY MURPHY: I'm baffled why Thomas Tuchel has recalled Jordan Henderson to the England squad - he's got fans' backs up already
15/03/25 10:44DANNY MURPHY: I listened to Thomas Tuchel explain his reasons for giving Jordan Henderson an England recall but it still makes no sense. It's utterly baffling to me.
Rasmus Hojlund is not good enough to be Man United's main man and they need an upgrade, writes DANNY MURPHY, but why would any A-list striker want to move to Old Trafford now?
09/03/25 02:00DANNY MURPHY: Is he good enough to one day be United's main centre forward in a team who challenge for big trophies? After 19 games without scoring, the evidence suggests he is not.
Ethan Nwaneri was utterly fearless as Arsenal demolished PSV in the last-16 - and showed similarities to an ex-Liverpool star, writes DANNY MURPHY
05/03/25 10:30DANNY MURPHY: It felt like Mikel Arteta told his players to get after PSV. It was high-tempo, high-risk from the start. There was a real urgency in Arsenal's press, as if they needed to get goals quickly.
Why Arne Slot's debut season could beat Jose Mourinho's as the greatest ever, writes DANNY MURPHY
01/03/25 12:00DANNY MURPHY: People have been so busy picking over the shortcomings of Manchester City, Arsenal and the rest, there hasn't been enough recognition of what Arne Slot and Liverpool are doing.

02/02/25 02:00DANNY MURPHY: I don't recognise Levy as the ogre or tyrant he's portrayed as from the chairman I knew when I was at Spurs. Our first conversation came when I turned down Spurs.
Enzo Maresca needs a better No 1 goalkeeper than Robert Sanchez if Chelsea want to win the biggest prizes, writes DANNY MURPHY
25/01/25 10:30DANNY MURPHY: Chelsea will always create chances and score goals. The reason they haven't been able to sustain a title challenge is that they lack experience and leadership at the other end.
Arsenal's draw with Aston Villa highlighted one glaringly obvious flaw that WILL cost Gunners the Premier League title, writes DANNY MURPHY - and it's NOT their lack of a top striker
19/01/25 02:00DANNY MURPHY: The tension even filtered its way to Mikel Arteta who has been less excitable on the touchline in general this season but reverted to type as his side lost their way at the Emirates.

06/01/25 05:01DANNY MURPHY: If Ruben Amorim learned anything from Manchester United 's unexpected draw against Liverpool , it's that being pragmatic suits his current set of players.
Ruben Amorim needs to get over his feud with Alejandro Garnacho and MUST start the Man United talent against Liverpool, writes DANNY MURPHY
04/01/25 10:30DANNY MURPHY: Alejandro Garnacho has not started any of Manchester United 's last six games, but would be one of the first names on my teamsheet at Anfield on Sunday.
Ruben Amorim's plan against Newcastle was football suicide, writes DANNY MURPHY - but here's how the Man United boss can tweak it to stop the rot
01/01/25 05:00DANNY MURPHY: Few teams ask two players to go up against three, when they aren't equipped for the job and don't get any help, so I found it bizarre Amorim did it against Newcastle.
Why 2025 will be the year Mo Salah dethrones King Henry as the Premier League's greatest, writes DANNY MURPHY
28/12/24 05:00DANNY MURPHY: For two decades, King Henry has sat on the throne unopposed despite other exceptional talents. However, 2025 could be a watershed year.
DANNY MURPHY: Pep Guardiola must dig out his stars... with the axe! It's time for the Man City boss to introduce youthful energy to solve their crisis
21/12/24 10:30DANNY MURPHY: It's time to introduce youthful energy into the Man City team, either through the January transfer window or throwing in the fittest, hungriest players already at the club.
Here's why Jadon Sancho is back to his best at Chelsea - he is a loss for Man United and is making his case for an England return, writes DANNY MURPHY
14/12/24 10:30DANNY MURPHY: Sancho is again looking like the winger who ripped it up for Borussia Dortmund and it already feels like a no-brainer to turn his loan move into a permanent agreement.
Arsenal are the set-piece masters but here is how Fulham can avoid making the same basic errors as the Gunners' rivals, writes DANNY MURPHY
07/12/24 10:49DANNY MURPHY: Set-pieces are fashionable again thanks to Arsenal. You have to admire the delivery but their success this season is also due to opposition defenders not doing the basics.
DANNY MURPHY: I was in awe of Sir Alex Ferguson - but Pep Guardiola is better than him
30/11/24 05:00DANNY MURPHY: He had a presence and aura, confidence and authority which completely transferred through to his players. It was always a challenge to match their levels.
DANNY MURPHY: Man City's humiliating 4-0 loss by Tottenham is a wake-up call that Pep Guardiola can't ignore - his side have become far too easy to play against
23/11/24 10:28DANNY MURPHY: Saturday night's hammering at the Etihad Stadium by Tottenham is a massive wake-up call that Pep Guardiola has to take very seriously.
DANNY MURPHY: Three things Thomas Tuchel MUST do to bring World Cup glory - including a big decision on key player
16/11/24 10:42DANNY MURPHY: Thomas Tuchel has a big decision to make about Harry Kane . He is our best goalscorer, but will be almost 33 at the World Cup.
Why Pep Guardiola proteges Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca will NOT replace him at Manchester City, writes DANNY MURPHY
09/11/24 10:33It's a massive compliment to Pep Guardiola that two of the brightest Premier League managers worked for him at Manchester City and have greatly improved Chelsea and Arsenal on what they learned.
Ruben Amorim will have to ditch his three at the back philsophy at Man United, writes DANNY MURPHY - the squad he is inheriting is too slow!
02/11/24 10:30DANNY MURPHY: If Amorim demands this set of United players be progressive with the press and play a higher line, it would invite trouble.
Arne Slot has been an instant hit at Liverpool after enjoying a near-flawless start to the season, writes DANNY MURPHY, here are five reasons why the Dutchman has got the Reds ticking ahead of their biggest test yet
27/10/24 02:01DANNY MURPHY: Arne Slot has won 11 of his first 12 Liverpool matches as the club seamlessly move on from the Jurgen Klopp era.
Ideally my national team would be led by an English manager, writes DANNY MURPHY - But we don't have elite trophy-winning coaches
19/10/24 10:35My relationship with Sven Goran Eriksson was fairly straight-forward. Because of the great midfield options we had - Frank Lampard , Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes - I knew my place.
Mikel Arteta will fear Bukayo Saka's injury more than Lee Carsley. England's interim boss is blessed with TWO ready-made replacements for the Arsenal star against Finland, writes DANNY MURPHY
12/10/24 06:00DANNY MURPHY: At 5ft 8in Saka isn't the biggest figure, but he has such wonderful strength on the ball under pressure and a knack of being able to roll defenders and win free-kicks.
Aston Villa's Jhon Duran is deadly from anywhere! DANNY MURPHY breaks down the Colombian's six strikes this season after stunning winner against Bayern Munich
05/10/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: In making the super-sub role his own, Duran has given his manager a headache, with the 20-year-old outscoring England star Ollie Watkins who remains the starting No 9.
I'd be shocked if Unai Emery wanted the Man United job - he is adored by Aston Villa fans and the players will run through walls for him, writes DANNY MURPHY
05/10/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Unai Emery is a throwback. He has the power at Aston Villa that Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger once enjoyed. It's a unique arrangement in today's Premier League.
DANNY MURPHY: Man United can find joy against Tottenham by exploiting their obvious weakness - but I hope for Erik ten Hag's sake he's also working on a special plan to deal with James Maddison
28/09/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Manchester United are a club used to playing their way and blowing away the opposition but they aren't good enough to rely on that any more.
Arsenal will be sitting ducks if Mikel Arteta's only plan at Man City is to survive, writes DANNY MURPHY - and one name on the team sheet will tell you if he's going to sit back
22/09/24 01:00DANNY MURPHY: Arsenal definitely have the tools to fight for the Premier League again and Sunday afternoon's clash looks highly significant - even in September.
DANNY MURPHY: Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt may finally be the centre back partnership Erik ten Hag has been crying out for at Man United after strong showing at Southampton
14/09/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: There are encouraging signs Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez could be the solid central defensive pairing Erik ten Hag has craved.
DANNY MURPHY: Why I'm backing Harry Kane to break Peter Shilton's England appearances record as Three Lions striker prepares for 100th cap
07/09/24 11:20DANNY MURPHY: You know the old saying that simplicity is genius? That applied from a footballing point of view last night. If it was the start of Carsley's audition, he's done himself no harm.
DANNY MURPHY: My cousin Ben Futcher is a chip off the old block of his famous father Paul - he would be so proud of his son's debut in charge of England's under-21s tonight
06/09/24 01:59DANNY MURPHY: How thrilled Paul would be of his lad stepping up from being in charge of the under-20s to replace Lee Carsley on an interim basis.
The signing of Raheem Sterling is incredible business by Arsenal... he will bring experience and a winning mentality to the Gunners, writes DANNY MURPHY
31/08/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Raheem knows the high standards that Arteta sets. Likewise, Arteta knows how good a professional Raheem is and what a great role model he is.
My blood was pumping so hard I was SICK at half-time and had Ronnie Moran banging on the cubicle door! DANNY MURPHY - scorer of three Old Trafford winners - tells Arne Slot what to expect
31/08/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: That first walk down the Old Trafford tunnel to represent Liverpool is an experience I'll never forget, and I'm certain Arne Slot won't either.
DANNY MURPHY: No striker, no problem as Mikel Arteta banks on his defence - the goals will look after themselves and building strength in depth has been vital
24/08/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: While everyone has called for him to sign a traditional number nine, Arteta has signed an Italian defender, Riccardo Calafiori, and wants Spain midfielder Mikel Merino.
Why Manchester United MUST sign Ivan Toney if they want to finish inside the top four, writes DANNY MURPHY
18/08/24 01:00DANNY MURPHY: The Dutchman is strong and skilful, but not a proper centre forward. He likes to come to the ball and is more comfortable as a No 10 or wide. His scoring record is not great.
I feel for England but Gareth Southgate gave Spain too much respect in Euro 2024 final, writes DANNY MURPHY... he should NOT have changed formation
14/07/24 10:56Southgate ditched the wing-backs - that had produced our best performances of the tournament - because Spain were the best team in it.
From stopping Spain's Rolls Royce to being brave on the ball - DANNY MURPHY's six-point plan for England to win the Euro 2024 final
14/07/24 01:00DANNY MURPHY: Spain have been Euro 2024's outstanding team, winning six out of six matches, and stand in the way of England as the men's team bid for a first major trophy since 1966.
DANNY MURPHY: After the bold and brilliant changes England made against the Netherlands, Gareth Southgate has shown he CAN end our long trophy drought
10/07/24 11:26DANNY MURPHY: It was a huge decision to take off captain Harry Kane and Phil Foden, who was outstanding in the first half. But it's what the match situation required and the right thing to do.
Gareth Southgate will be contemplating dropping sluggish Harry Kane. And few fans would complain, writes DANNY MURPHY
06/07/24 09:54DANNY MURPHY: The dilemma now for Gareth Southgate is what to do with his captain and talisman for the semi-final, because I think he got a bit lucky against the Swiss.
DANNY MURPHY: England stars need to be given time... with the right plan they CAN replicate their club form for Gareth Southgate at Euro 2024
29/06/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: This England team are filled with players used to winning at their clubs with total faith in their managers' systems. It becomes ingrained when you work at it daily.
DANNY MURPHY: How Luka Modric is unlike any other current Ballon d'Or winner... and why we'll miss the Croatian midfield maestro when he's gone
22/06/24 11:45DANNY MURPHY: Only four current players have won the Ballon d'Or and three of them now play in the less arduous Saudi Arabian and North American leagues.
I want Gareth Southgate's men to win the Euros for Harry Kane, writes DANNY MURPHY... even if he did convince me it was time to retire!
15/06/24 10:39DANNY MURPHY: I quickly realised there was something special about the young striker, but it would have been a stretch to predict he'd become the greatest English striker of his generation.
Euro 2024 10 stars to watch: DANNY MURPHY picks out the 21-year-old we'll all be drooling over, a resurgent striker who's a threat to England and a defender wanted by Liverpool and Man United
12/06/24 09:00DANNY MURPHY: I've rarely seen a player dribble past opponents with such ease and I'd be amazed if we aren't all drooling over the 21-year-old.
England's one - admittedly poor - defeat by Iceland won't sway me... Gareth Southgate was right to pick Eberechi Eze over Jack Grealish, writes DANNY MURPHY
08/06/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Southgate was looking for people who can make an impact to supplement the core personnel; Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
Gary McAllister tells former Liverpool team-mate Danny Murphy why Scotland can get the monkey off their backs to make history at Euro 2024... and tips rivals England for success
08/06/24 04:00Talk about timing. When I arranged to catch up with my old pal Gary McAllister on Tuesday evening, I didn't imagine Scotland would be smashing England about at cricket's T20 World Cup.
DANNY MURPHY: Man United had a brilliant win - and set up like you should against foes with a higher footballing IQ - but it won't be enough to save Man United boss Erik ten Hag
25/05/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Erik ten Hag and Manchester United deserved to win the FA Cup. They set up exactly how you should against opponents with a higher footballing IQ.
VAR has SPOILED the ecstasy of scoring a goal, writes DANNY MURPHY... I can't see how you can love the game and want to keep something which kills all the joy
18/05/24 10:59DANNY MURPHY: Big clubs are probably going to vote in favour because they'll see themselves as the probable beneficiaries of more penalties and red cards being handed out.
DANNY MURPHY: The English game needs Arsenal to triumph in Premier League title race... Man City are showing no sign of slowing down and it's not good for the competition
18/05/24 10:00DANNY MURPHY: I have genuine concerns that an unprecedented fourth league title in a row for City won't be the end of it. Win it again today and it could go on to become five, six or seven.
DANNY MURPHY: Declan Rice is on the road to being the next Rodri at Arsenal... but even he couldn't have saved Man United's season
11/05/24 09:31Rice is one of the players of the season. You can't believe it's his first season at Arsenal. The transition after leaving West Ham has been seamless.
DANNY MURPHY: Ederson is the bedrock of Manchester City's rhythm and tempo, the Brazilian is the BEST ball-playing goalkeeper ever - but it'd be healthy if Arsenal win the title this season and end the current monopoly
04/05/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: We can eulogise about Erling Haaland's four goals and Footballer of the Year Phil Foden but don't underestimate the importance of Ederson.
DANNY MURPHY: Ange Postecoglou needs to adapt or Tottenham will suffer against Arsenal... it's admirable to have strong principles but there's nothing wrong in mixing it up
27/04/24 10:16DANNY MURPHY: Tottenham don't tend to deviate from 'Angeball'. Regardless of the opposition, they play on the front foot with a high defensive line and try to pass through midfield.
DANNY MURPHY: If Mohamed Salah goes, at least it will be for a big fee ...but keeping Virgil van Dijk is the key for new boss Arne Slot as he looks to fill Jurgen Klopp's huge shoes
27/04/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: There was no ideal candidate out there to replace Klopp because they are such huge shoes to fill. Not just in terms of team-building, but the relationship he had with the fans and the city.
Bruno Fernandes drives me crazy but wouldn't be so annoying if Man United had better players! DANNY MURPHY admits he's changed his opinion on Red Devils captain
20/04/24 11:00DANNY MURPHY: Bruno Fernandes may not be captaincy material in my eyes because of his petulance but he's also Manchester United's best player by a mile.
I didn't touch Bruno but he went down screaming! Fulham's JOAO PALHINHA tells Danny Murphy about facing his Portugal pal Fernandes, his aborted move to Bayern - and what Liverpool can expect if Amorim gets the top job
14/04/24 01:00INTERVIEW BY DANNY MURPHY: Palhinha has been an integral part of the most successful Fulham team since I captained our 2010 Europa League finalists.
DANNY MURPHY: Arsenal's magic man Martin Odegaard is a great leader like David Beckham... the Norwegian playmaker has gained the total respect of his team-mates
06/04/24 09:30DANNY MURPHY: Odegaard set the tone with his press. Brighton were good in the opening 15 minutes but he was relentless with and without the ball.
DANNY MURPHY: Mikel Arteta's Arsenal is a kaleidoscope of influence from Pep Guardiola, conviction, and controversial goalkeeping choices as the Gunners travel to the Etihad
30/03/24 10:30Mikel Arteta would have learned plenty from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City but nothing more important than having the courage of your convictions.
DANNY MURPHY: I admire Mikel Arteta for having the courage of his convictions and backing himself to make tough decisions... he's a serious rival to Pep Guardiola
30/03/24 10:30DANNY MURPHY: Mikel Arteta would have learned plenty from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City but nothing more important than having the courage of your convictions.
DANNY MURPHY ON THE PAIN OF MISSING A TOURNAMENT: David Beckham put an arm round me when my World Cup dream died... I couldn't hold back the tears
23/03/24 10:31DANNY MURPHY: For some players, making the England squad can become an obsession. It will be on their minds constantly. I was never one of them.
